BENNINGTON, Vermont: Lenten Program and Supper each Wednesday

The community is invited to a program and simple supper each Wednesday during Lent, (February 28–April 4,) from 6-8:15 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant St., Bennington, Vermont.

Leading the program will be the Rev. Kenneth Poppe, dean of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Burlington, Vermont, who will focus on ways to deepen one's prayer life and fellowship with parishioners. There is no charge for the program or the supper. St. Peter's facilities are wheelchair accessible.

WINNETKA, Illinois: Elaine Pagels to speak at Church of the Holy Comforter

The Adult Enrichment Committee of Winnetka Congregational Church and the Parish Life Committee at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth invite all to hear Dr. Elaine Pagels, noted author and religious scholar, speak at both churches March 16-17.

Pagels, currently the Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion at Princeton University, is the author of numerous books, including The Gnostic Gospels (1979), Adam, Eve and the Serpent (1988), The Origin of Satan (1995) and Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas (2003). Her latest book, Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity, co-authored with Dr. Karen King, is due this spring and will illustrate how the recently discovered Gospel of Judas provides a window into understanding how Jesus' followers understood his death and why Judas betrayed Jesus.

WEST PARK, New York: Holy Cross Monastery to host Peace Vigil for Iraq

Holy Cross Monastery, located in West Park, New York, will be offering a Prayer Vigil for Peace in conjunction with the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq on March 16. On the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq, Christians of all denominations and from all over the nation are joining together to pray for an end to the bloodshed.

Brother Bede Thomas Mudge, OHC, Prior of Holy Cross Monastery, said that "it was essential that Christians of all denominations gather together to pray to God our earnest desire for peace, our concern for all those affected by the war, and our hope that Iraq can be rebuilt and restored."

The vigil schedule is as follows:

  •  7 a.m.–7 p.m.: Silent Vigil of Prayer for Peace. Participants are invited to join in prayer in the Church of St. Augustine at Holy Cross Monastery.
  •  Join any of the Offices or the Eucharist:
  •  7a.m. Matins
  •  8:30 a.m. Eucharist
  •  12 p.m.                Diurnum
  •  5 p.m. Vespers

(The silent vigil will resume after each of the Offices.)

  • Bell Tolling on the hour in memory of all who have lost their lives in the war
  • 7:30 p.m.: Peace Liturgy. The monastic community and ministers of area churches and religious orders will lead the Peace Liturgy. All are invited to join with us as we pray for peace in Iraq.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Christian Peace Witness for Iraq

On March 16, at 7 p.m., the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq, Christian Peace Witness for Iraq will gather at the Washington National Cathedral to share an ecumenical worship service of repentance and hope. A candlelight procession to the White House and a late night peace vigil will follow. There will be opportunities of civil disobedience for those who choose to risk arrest. On March 17, Episcopalians will gather for brunch at St. Alban's Church, and plan for the future.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, in Bennington, Vermont, will recognize Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, March 18, at services at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and 5 p.m.  

Mothering Sunday is the day chosen by the church to give thanks for the Church as Mother, for the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God, and for our own mothers and grandmothers and mother representatives.

St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh invites all to join on March 18 in welcoming guest preacher and speaker, the Rev. Greg Wilson, chaplain for the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at Temple University. 

Wilson will preach at the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services as well as speak at the Rector’s Forum at 9 a.m. on the topic Where Have All the Young People Gone?: Investing in the Church’s Future.” Wilson will help examine the vital role of reaching students on American college campuses.

Visitors Weekend at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, takes place March 23-25 providing seekers, who are striving to be faithful to Christ, with the opportunity to explore a renewed vision of what it means to live out the Gospel in our changing world.

Throughout the weekend, attendees will get a feel for the seminary campus and its community.

There will be small group activities that allow for discussion of formation and vocational discernment, community life, finances, housing and academics. Students will be available to discuss why they chose the Seminary of the Southwest and the impact of that choice.

NEW YORK CITY: A Lenten Retreat with James Alison

Trinity Institute and the Trinity Church Discovery Program are set to present a theological retreat March 30–April 1, exploring the concepts of Christian vulnerability with Catholic priest and author James Alison. "The Forgiving Victim: An Induction into Christian Vulnerability" will explore further the theme of Trinity Institute's 37th National Theological Conference, "God's Unfinished Future," held in January, by encouraging personal and community transformation through faith, hope and imagination.

Hosted by Trinity Church, Wall Street, the retreat will open with a free, public lecture on March 30 (reservations are required), followed by a two-day, non-residential retreat March 31-April 1.

NEW YORK CITY: Finding a Daily Oasis

The General Theological Seminary will offer "Finding a Daily Oasis -- The Art of Contemplative Prayer for People with Busy Lives" on March 31 to explore the necessity of intentional daily experience of God to give spiritual discernment, vision, and energy in daily lives.

This class ($450 to audit or $700 for 1 graduate-level credit) will emphasize the practice of contemplative prayer in class and at home, as well in the parish setting.

The Rev. Dr. David Keller, founder of the Contemplative Ministry Project and former Steward of the Episcopal House of Prayer at St. John's Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, will lead.

BENNINGTON, Vermont: Holy Baptism to be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, in Bennington, Vermont, will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on four Holy Days as specified in the Book of Common Prayer. These are: Easter Vigil, Pentecost, All Saint's Day and the Baptism of Our Lord.

SEATTLE, Washington: Saint Mark's to host musical performance by Yuval Ron and his Middle Eastern Ensemble

Yuval Ron, world music artist and composer of the 2006 Oscar winning musical film “West Bank Story,” brings his Ensemble to perform The Mystical Music of the Middle East at Saint Mark’s Cathedral on March 18, at 4 p.m. 

The concert will feature Jewish, Sufi and Christian Armenian musical traditions from Morocco, Lebanon, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Yemen, Armenia and Andalusia. 

Their work has been presented by PBS, NPR, the World Festival of Sacred Music in Los Angeles and the International Peace Festival in South Korea, among many other venues.  The Ensemble has held residencies at Brandeis and Johns Hopkins Universities.

NEW YORK CITY: Celebration of Bach at Church of the Holy Apostles

David Hurd will direct the Choir of Holy Apostles in a musical celebration of the 322nd birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Apostles.  Included will be three of Bach's Motets and duets and arias from several of his Cantatas.  Instrumentalists will perform with the professional Choir on the organ of the Church of the Holy Apostles, oboe, recorder, and cello.

The Atlanta Episcopal Cursillo Community will host an evening with John Michael Talbot, a prolific Catholic singer/songwriter known throughout the world for his spiritually meditative compositions, on March 23, at 7 p.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Bach’s St. John Passion at Washington National Cathedral

Intense, stirring emotion is invoked when world-class singers and musicians perform J.S. Bach's St. John Passion during a single rendition on Palm Sunday, April 1, at 4 p.m., at the Washington National Cathedral.

Performed amidst the Cathedral's magnificent iconography, St. John Passion comes alive as the Cathedral Combined Choirs are accompanied by the Baroque Orchestra featuring period instruments. Internationally acclaimed soloists specializing in early music performance include soprano Elizabeth Weigle, countertenor Roger Isaacs, tenor Aaron Sheehan, and bass William Sharp. Robert Petillo is the evangelist while James Shaffran plays Christus.

Audience members will experience the tragedy of this story through the text, music and grand space. The Passion will be performed in German.
