Coming March 21, 2007...

BENNINGTON, Vermont: Lenten Program and Supper each Wednesday

The community is invited to a program and simple supper each Wednesday during Lent, (February 28–April 4,) from 6-8:15 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant St., Bennington, Vermont.

Leading the program will be the Rev. Kenneth Poppe, dean of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Burlington, Vermont, who will focus on ways to deepen one's prayer life and fellowship with parishioners. There is no charge for the program or the supper. St. Peter's facilities are wheelchair accessible.

THOUSAND OAKS, California: New Women's Spiritual Study Group

A new women's spiritual study group will meet at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Thousand Oaks, California on March 22, at 7 p.m.

"The Power of Intention" by Dr. Wayne Dyer, a predecessor book to "The Secret," will be the subject of the first meeting. The group will discuss the book's themes of co-creating one's life with God and harnessing the power of positive thinking.

AUSTIN, Texas: Visitors weekend at Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest

Visitors Weekend at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, takes place March 23-25 providing seekers, who are striving to be faithful to Christ, with the opportunity to explore a renewed vision of what it means to live out the Gospel in our changing world.

Throughout the weekend, attendees will get a feel for the seminary campus and its community.

There will be small group activities that allow for discussion of formation and vocational discernment, community life, finances, housing and academics. Students will be available to discuss why they chose the Seminary of the Southwest and the impact of that choice.

FORT WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania: African Children's Ministry

St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh invites all to join them on March 25 as they welcome guest speaker Grant Norris, founder of the African Children's Ministry, to speak on the topic "Creating an African Children's Ministry to Combat HIV/AIDS."

Norris will share how the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr worked to involve over 100 parishioners to create an African Children's Ministry to support the work that the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) is doing in Malawi to combat the spread and devastation wrought by HIV/AIDS. St. Thomas' has also recently begun a partnership with GAIA.

SEATTLE, Washington: Author Nora Gallagher to speak at St. Mark's Cathedral

Best-selling author Nora Gallagher will read from her latest book and preach at Saint Mark's Cathedral, Seattle, Washington on March 25 beginning at 10:10 a.m.

Gallagher's books include "Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith," and "Practicing Resurrection: A Memoir of Work, Doubt, Discernment, and Moments of Grace," which was a finalist for the Beliefnet Book of the Year award.

The inaugural Joanna Dewey Scholars Lecture, created as a tribute to Dr. Joanna Dewey, Harvey Guthrie, Jr. professor Emerita and former academic dean at Episcopal Divinity School (EDS,) will be held March 27 at 6:30 p.m.at the Cambridge, Massachusetts, seminary.

NEW YORK CITY: A Lenten Retreat with James Alison

Trinity Institute and the Trinity Church Discovery Program are set to present a theological retreat March 30–April 1, exploring the concepts of Christian vulnerability with Catholic priest and author James Alison. "The Forgiving Victim: An Induction into Christian Vulnerability" will explore further the theme of Trinity Institute's 37th National Theological Conference, "God's Unfinished Future," held in January, by encouraging personal and community transformation through faith, hope and imagination.

Hosted by Trinity Church, Wall Street, the retreat will open with a free, public lecture on March 30 (reservations are required), followed by a two-day, non-residential retreat March 31-April 1.

NEW YORK CITY: Finding a Daily Oasis

The General Theological Seminary will offer "Finding a Daily Oasis -- The Art of Contemplative Prayer for People with Busy Lives" on March 31 to explore the necessity of intentional daily experience of God to give spiritual discernment, vision, and energy in daily lives.

This class ($450 to audit or $700 for 1 graduate-level credit) will emphasize the practice of contemplative prayer in class and at home, as well in the parish setting.

The Rev. Dr. David Keller, founder of the Contemplative Ministry Project and former Steward of the Episcopal House of Prayer at St. John'sAbbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, will lead.

RIPON, Wisconsin: Spiritual Day for Women

St. Peter's Episcopal Church, in Ripon, Wisconsin, will hold a Spiritual Day for Women on March 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The featured speaker will be the Rev. Karen Gygax-Rodriguez, pastor of the Federated Church of Green Lake. Topics will include intentional prayer, amplifying the power of your personal prayer life and blessing others by your faithful prayers; and intentional Scripture, including incorporating Scripture on a daily basis and fixed-hour divine readings.

BENNINGTON, Vermont: Holy Baptism to be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, in Bennington, Vermont, will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on four Holy Days as specified in the Book of Common Prayer. These are: Easter Vigil, Pentecost, All Saint's Day and the Baptism of Our Lord.

NEW YORK CITY: Celebration of Bach at Church of the Holy Apostles

David Hurd will direct the Choir of Holy Apostles in a musical celebration of the 322nd birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Apostles.  Included will be three of Bach's Motets and duets and arias from several of his Cantatas.  Instrumentalists will perform with the professional Choir on the organ of the Church of the Holy Apostles, oboe, recorder, and cello.

Violinist Joel Lambdin and pianist Emi Kagawa, co-founders of the chamber music ensemble MANI, will present their second concert in the group's residency at the Church of the Ascension at 127 Kent Street on March 31, at 4 p.m.

The performance will feature Johannes Brahms' Horn Trio, with French horn player Sara Della Poste, and works for the violin and piano by Claude Debussy and Clara Schumann.

Coming April 1, 2007…       HOLY WEEK / PALM SUNDAY

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Bach’s St. John Passion at Washington National Cathedral

Intense, stirring emotion is invoked when world-class singers and musicians perform J.S. Bach's St. John Passion during a single rendition on Palm Sunday, April 1, at 4 p.m., at the Washington National Cathedral.

Performed amidst the Cathedral's magnificent iconography, St. John Passion comes alive as the Cathedral Combined Choirs are accompanied by the Baroque Orchestra featuring period instruments. Internationally acclaimed soloists specializing in early music performance include soprano Elizabeth Weigle, countertenor Roger Isaacs, tenor Aaron Sheehan, and bass William Sharp. Robert Petillo is the evangelist while James Shaffran plays Christus.

Audience members will experience the tragedy of this story through the text, music and grand space. The Passion will be performed in German.
